Backus Hospital Nurse Residency Program

Backus Hospital offers a unique program designed to bridge the gap between nursing school training and actual nursing practice in an acute-care setting. The Backus Nurse Residency Program builds on the newly-licensed nurses previous academic knowledge by providing in-depth learning through clinical immersion, simulation training and classroom-style activities.

Nurse Residents will select a specialty track in which they will receive focused clinical education and mentoring, sharing a patient assignment with a Clinical Partner for approximately 12 weeks. The specialty tracks offered will vary based on the needs of the hospital. Previous tracks that have been offered include: Medical/Surgical/Telemetry and Emergency Services. In addition to clinical immersion on the track units, Nurse Residents meet weekly in a classroom format to share experiences and receive additional education and training.

Following successful completion of the Clinical Immersion phase, Nurse Residents will be eligible to transition to their staff position. Nurse Residents are expected to be able to work any shift (Days, Evenings, or Nights), and the ability to maintain a flexible schedule is required. Professional development opportunities will be provided to Nurse Residents for the remainder of the one-year period through seminars, simulations, and monthly check-in meetings with Clinical Coaches and Educators.

Admission to the Backus Nurse Residency Program is highly competitive. Online applications are only accepted three times a year.

There will be three information sessions offered at the Hartford HealthCare East Region System Support Office , 11 Stott Ave in Norwich . Staff will be on hand to assist with the application process and to answer questions about the program. These sessions will occur:

Wednesday, April 24th 10a-12 noon Stott Ave Conf rooms A & B
Thursday, April 25th 5pm-7pm Stott Ave Conf rooms A & B
Friday, June 7th 1pm 3pm Stott Ave Conf rooms A & B

By completing the Backus Nurse Residency Program, newly-licensed nurses are able to competently and safely manage a full patient assignment with confidence, and will be well-positioned to become future leaders in the nursing profession.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Graduate of a school of nursing. BSN required within 5 years of date of hire as a Nurse Resident.


Experience : New Graduate or less than one year experience in an acute care setting as an RN.


License and Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire. Ability to obtain and maintain department specific certifications. May start with GN Student status but MUST successfully complete first NCLEX testing no later than 60 days from program start date (September 19, 2019) or 90 days from your graduation date (whichever occurs first).

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Education:
BSN
Experience: Previous Acute Care experience or experience in another health field.
License and Certification: Current unrestricted license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut. Certification in clinical area.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Basic knowledge of Nursing principles and practices. Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions. Communicates effectively in order to provide technical or complex information as well as instruction. Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with departments, employees, physicians, managers and patients. Ability to handle multiple priorities, be flexible and a team player. Ability to work in a stressful environment. Commitment to customer service. Basic computer knowledge in order to enter/retrieve data.

PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING
Requires high level of analytical ability in order to gather and interpret information from various sources. Able to take the appropriate action in response to changes, circumstances, problems and/or emergency situations. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
